London Stansted (STN, postcode CM24 1QW) has a single terminal, and the Express Set-Down zone sits right outside its doors. It costs around £7 for up to 15 minutes — quick and convenient, but easily the most expensive way to say goodbye. Stay past your free minutes and the charge keeps climbing, so it is best reserved for when you genuinely need to be at the front door, such as helping a passenger with heavy bags or reduced mobility.

Crucially, there is no free waiting or loitering on the terminal approach roads. They are monitored and kept clear for moving traffic, so you cannot simply pull over and wait. If your plan is to drop and dash in under 15 minutes, the set-down works; for anything longer, you will want a different option.

The free Mid Stay drop-off — the one most people miss

The smart-money choice is the free drop-off zone at the Mid Stay car park, roughly 10 minutes from the terminal. You park briefly for free, then hop on the free 24-hour shuttle bus that runs to the front of the terminal. For the price of a few extra minutes you avoid the £7 set-down entirely — handy on Stansted's many early Ryanair and easyJet departures in the 04:00–06:00 window, when budgets are already tight.

It is the same approach savvy locals use again and again. If you are dropping off a fellow traveller and you are not in a desperate rush, the Mid Stay zone is almost always the better call than queuing for the paid set-down right at the doors.

Doing pick-ups the calm way

Pick-ups are where people lose the most money, because flights rarely land bang on time. Instead of circling the approach roads — where every loop risks another set-down charge — park in the Short Stay car park opposite the terminal, a 2–3 minute walk away, and wait there. Track the flight, then walk across to meet your passenger only when they have actually landed and cleared the terminal.
